We all have had experience with the dreaded feeling of our computer not connecting to the internet, and Murphy’s Law dictates that this typically will happen either late at night or on a weekend when a big project is due! Here are a few steps you can try on your own to restore your connection and get back up and running.
1. Shut down your computer. Check all connections between your computer and your modem, as well as between your modem and the wall in case a cable has either come loose or even unplugged. Make sure the connections are tight and secure and reboot your computer and try to connect again.
2. If step 1 did not fix the problem, the second step to trying to troubleshoot your connection problem is to reset the modem. Ideally whoever installed the equipment for you has already shown how to do this, if not here is how to go about doing so. Shut down your computer, unplug your modem from the electrical outlet, and then unplug your network connection from the wall. Wait at least 30 seconds and start by plugging your network connection back into the wall, and then back into the electrical outlet. Let all the lights on the modem come back on and turn your computer once it has booted up all the way try connecting to the internet.
3. If steps 1 and 2 do not fix your problem, you may want to call your Internet Service Provider to see if there are any reported outages in your area, and have them test their signal to your modem. They may also be able to talk you through some simple troubleshooting to determine whether the problem is with your network equipment or your computer.
